MERIDIAN FARM MARKET TSAWWASSEN
Instead of the typical stark white, overly lit grocery store, we wanted this Meridian Farm Market in Tsawwassen to pioneer a new concept—a brand story and aesthetic that would be rooted in the rustic heritage of local farmers' markets and roadside vegetable stands.
A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE
We came up with the idea that every Meridian Farm Market that opens should feel like it has always been there. To channel that authenticity, we contacted the local historical society to source photos and decor inspiration for the Tsawwassen market, and this is something we have done for each subsequent Meridian grocery store we’ve designed (there are now seven in total), so that they each feel original and native to their respective neighbourhoods.
PAINTING A PICTURE
We covered some sections of walls in all different types of salvaged wood, and in other areas we did a custom paint treatment to make the store’s walls resemble weather-beaten exterior cladding (it took six different shades of grey to get it right).
The artwork on the walls features historical photography from around Tsawwassen—pieces like quarter horses pulling wooden plows across local fields and fishing boats loaded with the day's catch. Chalk scrawls of daily specials on black product boards carry that handmade touch, and the old wood wagon used out front for store displays was a farm-perfect antique we sourced and shipped from the U.S.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF GROCERY STORE
As you'll see in Meridian stores across B.C., each has a strong sense of place and time, bringing back that nostalgic roadside stand experience in a way that feels refreshingly personal.
